Bring Spring Indoors with Early Bloomers
Spring is almost here! The Vernal Equinox arrives on Thursday, March 20th, marking the official beginning of a gardener’s favorite season.
Bring Spring Indoors with Early Bloomers
As the garden starts to awaken, why not bring a little bit inside? Forcing branches is simple and a beautiful way to enjoy early blooms such as Forsythia, Redbud, Dogwood, Lilac, Pussy Willow and Viburnum.
Try cutting branches from:
Forsythia (Forsythia ssp.) – bright golden yellow blooms
Redbud (Cercis canadensis) – delicate pink flowers
Dogwood (Cornus florida) – elegant white or pink blossoms
Lilac (Syringa ssp.) – fragrant purple or white clusters
Pussy Willow (Salix discolor) – soft silvery catkins
Viburnum (Viburnum ssp.) – early white or pink blooms
How to Force Branches Indoors:
Choose branches with plump buds. Cut stems at least 2-3 feet long for the best display.
Use a tall container, filling it ¾ of the way with water to keep stems hydrated and provide weight for stability.
Place the container in a cool room (55-65°F) and out of direct sunlight.
Mist the branches a couple times a week to keep the buds from drying out.
Patience is key! You’ll be rewarded with fresh spring blossoms indoors.
